Karlos was a typical Academy intake officer. Nothing special was seen of him until his later years at the academy. He began to excel beyond most members of his class in the field of Science, even though he had originally thought to be an Engineer, warp core engineer. - His rapid improvement at his studies saw that he was graduated top of his class as the most improved student. However, he's far from the best, his grasp on Science is merely at the beginning of a long adventure.
His parents, both officers of starfleet, were his inspiration to join. His father was a Commander and 2IC of a ship, originally a Security officer, where as his mother was a Chief engineer of a cargo vessel. He trained hard physically and worked well in the Engineering field, however he soon developed a passion for Science.
He is a good listener and he is more than happy to help/teach/work on something assigned to him, though he lacks in social contact and easily becomes alienated from peer groups, though he would more than happily sit and work on something. He is more competent speaking with someone in the Science/Medical field than any other since he is has more to relate to.
Karlos then moved on to work as Chief Medical Officer in the Fontana Foundation Fleet. He was and in many ways still highly respectful of his old fleet and it's officers. He feels passionately about it and didn't allow Starfleet to transfer him without a fight.
It wasn't long after his leaving the Fontana Fleet that he taken on Diplomacy training in an attempt to get out and explore space by making first contact or helping in diplomatic relations with other species.
He was then appealed to command to found a fleet of Exploration. That appeal then became the Exploration Foundation.
Past of the 'Orion' Symbiont
The Orion Symbiont has lived 3 previous generations, making Karlos the 4th. In 3 of the 4 generations, the Orion Symbiont was a member of Starfleet.
Generation One: Following the birth of the Symbiont, Orion was given to a young Trill named Elissa. She was a member of the Starfleet Diplomatic corps. living a long and successful life.
Generation Two: At the end of Elissa's time, the Orion Symbiont was then given to a Trill Male. The name of this man was removed from file, though details of his chosen name 'King' still remains. This Trill became rogue, a 'space pirate' working closely with the Klingons. It wasn't until near the end of his life that he returned to Trill to give up the Symbiont and in return resting in peace.
Generation Three: Following King's return, the Symbiont was given to another female. Kira, taking her knowledge of the host Elissa, joined Starfleet. She joined as a Tactical officer, though a covert operation ended badly. Kira was shot several times, barely making it back to medical. Karlos was an unjoined Trill studying at the academy. In order to save the Symbiont he was quickly selected to take on the joining as Host.
