Part 01
Was contacted by high command they wanted me liaison with Commander Selyn of Starfleet Intel concerning a pickup of an Romulan Defector who might have a Prototype of a new weapon system being deployed on the front soon. No word have apparently been sent to Admiral Karlos my commanding officer nor would he as far as my contact told me.
The op would be a simple setup. warp in, pickup target, make sure no one have follow the target and then warp out and head for Sierra Star base 39 to deliver the target and the prototype. It seems easy enough though in hindsight I should have trusted the nagging feeling.
A trap!. I felt it in my bones... as soon as we arrived at the designated place, 4 squads of interecptors flow from the hiding places amongst the asteroids and swooping downwards to lay a stream of cannon fire to support the advancing of a Brigand Class Battle cruiser which beam arrays would have be red hot form the searing heat that impacted on the front shields. as our way forward where relentless block our way behind seem like the only option left to get some room for maneuver. More where coming now 3 Orion Corvettes opening up as soon they where in range. The only thing that saved the ship in those moments was the shields I had on maximum strength since entering the system and the diligence of the crew hold her together but the continue strain on the shields began to tell stripping away with each volley. nowhere near room enough to get a good lock on to the different targets I order spray of cannon fire to scatter as many of them, to make a run for in the belt of asteroids but even this seem to have been foreseen as soon as we arrived at the edge of the belt turrets open fire and a torrent of superheated plasma stripping the last power from our already weaken shields. In no time most of the ships systems where severely damage.
Sensing no time to loss I sent a general distress call on all frequencies.
Part 02
The trap had been played well and most other star captain would have ben proud to be the execute of it most of the system on “U.S.S. Ranting Dane” where critical level. Lucky the general distress have succeeded in reaching my commanding officer Admiral Karlos. Our fleet massive flagship the “U.S.S. Arch Royal” have apparently been scanning signal traffic on their patrol of “Sierra Star Base 39”. My commanding officers Karlos, Z'hai and Monroe, where of cause understandable confused and was to be expected. Thou by a flicker of fate I where spared a length explanation as another signal sound was received by “U.S.S. Bunker Hill” Captain Arthur Redley ship had apparently been patrolling nearby and with all hast have ben speeding towards our location.
I tried to persuade him not to blunder in to the trap as I had, though most of the enemy of the time where either cripple or wrecks by this time most of the turrets and interceptors where still very much active and not knowing the capability of the stalwart Captain Redley. I tried the last thing I could think of emergence warp jump to the nearest point I could think off Sol...
It backfired the punishment of the combat and constant strain on the energy levels of my dears ship where too much and the warpcoils went into emergency shutdown to avoid a blowout completely but the damage had been done weapons, shields and engine where offline only the auxiliary were let to provide life support and to power critical systems there drifting amongst the debris of battle helpless to do anything the watch the drama unfold interceptors when out the harassment of our gunner crews assemble in a attack formation to in our suffering.
Captain Redley arrived just at this moment and with well place phazers attack from the front swatted the group closing in for the kill. Turn as he arrived to broadside another Brigand which had advance to assist the interceptors gutting it the process. The good captain then took up position to freighting over some much needed tools and men to help with make ship repairs so much so that I would be able to limb back to Starbase 39, he did how ever recommend that should face a disciplinary committee if my mission failed after all this. As soon as the warpcoils and energy systems where restored he warp back to continue his own patrol and I resumed the painstaking search for my target amongst the ruins.
Nothing... nothing in the designated area, no trace among the wrecks or on any nearby planetoids after all this no sign where to be seen...
During the trancesit to “Sierra Starbase 39”went around the ship to see for my self the toils that had been inflicted onto my ship during the cause of the battle that so nearly had cost us all. In sickbay 23 critical injured where intern for medical care 8 of them alone died before we came to rest on 39 and the ship itself would have to return to dry dock for 4 weeks. I went to station to station to try a boost moral thou for what good it did I am not sure indeed if there mood where as dark as mine not much would help. Indeed Kur'ruth, my Klingon bridge officer, where a smoldering fire that could turn ablaze if we where not all exhaust.
Finally being coasted in by the dock officer on 39 and coming to rest on the bedding, I gave my crew a 2 day shore-leave to take their mind of the mission a bit, Monday will be hard for our doctor and counselor aboard ship but it may be the least of the worry for now if the weapon in question that our contact where to deliver to us where to be perfected.
Siting in my ready room laying final hands on my report of the failed mission for High command when my contact Commander Selyn had arrived aboard ship to concluded our liaison with each other. She also had some surprising things to tell.
Apparently the whole mission hand ben a ruse to eliminate a covenant of Orion Slavers in the area preying on the shipping lanes. They had been fed information that a new an powerful ship to ship weapon where transported aboard my ship, route, size and strength had be giving to the slavers so they could prepare for my arriw.
I have ben played like an expendable pawn in a chess game for dominance. But why I would have taken the mission anyway hand I known what to expect? And may had ben able to avoid, the casualties and damage to my ship, and my not have had to embarrass my Commanding officer in front of another fleet.
In light of the official version of the story claiming that the mission where a failure I have forwarded Captain Arthur Redley's recommendation of a disciplinary hearing to Admiral Karlos. The conclusion of the hearing may compromise my carer in Starfleet but duty demands it that I do it...
after action report have ben sent to High command of Starfleet and to my liaison Commander Selyn.
